Local jazz flutist Lisa Polisar has written a book entitled "Straight Ahead:Ê
A Musician's Guide to Learning Jazz and Staying Inspired."Ê It is a guide
primarily for classically trained musicians who have an interest in learning
more about jazz and how to play it, but areÊperhaps too intimidated (or terrified)
to take those first steps.Ê The book guides the reader gently through the process.Ê
Straight Ahead has been out of print for awhile but we've now republished it

About the Author

Lisa Polisar has been a musician and writer for most of her life. She was six years old when she started flute and piano lessons and went on to earn her BachelorÕs Degree in flute performance from Hartt School of Music in Hartford, Connecticut, where she studied psychology, classical music and jazz. She has studied with such noted flutists as John Wion, Thomas Nyfenger, Randy Bowman, Ransom Wilson, Ildefonso Torres Lauren, Roger Stevens, and Hubert Laws. As a professional jazz flutist, Lisa has recorded on several CDs, has taught workshops on jazz improvisation and creativity, teaches privately, and performs regularly with various jazz ensembles throughout New Mexico.
As a writer, Lisa is a published mystery author, an art reviewer, writing instructor, fiction editor, and award-winning journalist. Her novels "Blackwater Tango" and "Knee Deep" are commercially available, and her nonfiction book, "Red Ryder: An American Icon" is forthcoming from University of New Mexico Press.
